Issue
- My name isn't displayed right in Outlook
- My name is wrong in Outlook
- My name shows strange characters, boxes, or symbols instead of letters
- I can't change my display name in Outlook
Environment
Resolution
Display names in Outlook are provided by the University's back-end systems and cannot be changed directly within Outlook. Depending on which part of your name is incorrect, follow the applicable steps below.
First Name Is Incorrect
- Your Chosen Name field may have been set incorrectly in the Duquesne Portal Personal Information section.
- Go to the Chosen First Name page on the Duquesne Intranet.
- Set or remove your Chosen First Name as needed.
- Allow up to 72 hours for the change to reflect in all systems.
Last Name Is Incorrect
- Determine your affiliation:
- Students: Contact the Registrar to request a last name change.
- Faculty/Staff: Contact Human Resources to request a last name change.
- Allow up to 72 hours for the change to reflect in all systems.
Special Characters Display Incorrectly (é, è, î, etc.)
- Special characters may not display correctly in all encoding schemes, and may appear as boxes, backwards question marks, or other strange characters.
- Go to the Chosen Name field on the Duquesne Intranet.
- Remove the special characters from your name in this field.
- Allow up to 72 hours for the change to reflect in all systems.
Cause
Outlook display names are populated from the University's back-end systems (e.g., Chosen Name field, official name records) rather than being editable within Outlook itself. Incorrect Chosen Name settings, outdated legal name records, or encoding limitations for special characters can cause the display name to appear differently than expected.
