How To: Use Templates in LISTSERV

Description

If you need to send an email to a large number of recipients, we recommend requesting a mailing list. The University uses LISTSERV to create and manage electronic mailing lists.

Newsletter templates are a convenient way to send mass-emails that have been formatted and styled for communication. They can be created and edited by LISTSERV moderators. This article will explain how to create and edit them.

Steps

Editing an Existing Template

  1. Under List Management, select Newsletter Templates

  2. Select a list that you want to edit templates for from the dropdown, and click Update

  3. At the bottom of the options, you will see a set of templates that have already been created
  4. Click on the one that you want to edit, and select Edit

  5. You will now be able to edit the template; use the options on the top to edit certain parts of the template

How to Re-Write Mail Template Headers

  1. Navigate to List Management, then to Mail Templates

  2. Listed here are all the headers you can change; make sure to select All Templates to take a look at all templates offered
Removing an Unsubscribe Link from Emails
  1. Under Mail Templates, select All Templates

  2. Look for two templates called DEFAULT_BOTTOM_BANNER and DEFAULT_BOTTOM_BANNER_HTML. On every list, the unsubscribe information is located in these templates. Select DEFAULT_BOTTOM_BANNER first.

  3. If there is currently an unsubscribe link, you will see what is attached to each email message in the box. Delete the information and select Update

  4. Repeat these steps for DEFAULT_BOTTOM_BANNER_HTML
