How To: Create and Add Assignments to Modules in Canvas

This article is intended to show the user how to create a new Assignment and add an existing Assignment, to a Module in Canvas.

Create a New Assignment

  1. Click Modules in the course navigation menu.

  2. Choose the Module you wish to create an Assignment in, and click the + sign, located to the far right.

  3. In the Add Item pop-up window, the dropdown box at the top will automatically default to Assignment.
    • a. Click [Create Assignment].
    • b. Type a name in the Assignment Name text box.
    • c. Click Add Item when finished.

  4. To create the Assignment, click on the Assignment name.

  5. Click Edit in the upper right hand corner.

  6. In the text box underneath the Rich Content Editor (RCE), type or upload instructions for the Assignment. Optional: Press enter and insert other content that will go along with the Assignment, in the text box. i.e. videos, files, images, etc.

  7. Underneath the text box select the following:
    • a. Points: Type how many points you would like the assignment to be.
    • b. Assignment Group: Click the dropdown arrow to choose which group you would like the Assignment to go in.
      Note: If you have weighted totals set up, make sure you choose the correct group for this Assignment to be in.
    • c. Display Grade as: Click the dropdown arrow to choose how you wish to display the grade for this Assignment.
    • d. Do not count this assignment towards the final grade: only check this box if you wish for this assignment not to count toward the final grade.

  8. Select your Submission Type from the dropdown arrow.
    • a. No Submission: This is best used for in person presentations, participation points, and optional/extra credit activities.
    • b. Online: If choosing online submission, you will also choose a text entry, website URL, media recording, student annotation, and/or file upload.
      Note: You will also be given the submission attempts option. Select Submission Attempts using the dropdown arrow under Allowed Attempts to select unlimited or limited attempts.
    • c. On Paper: Choose when having students hand in an assignment on paper, in person. For example a test taken in class.
    • d. External Tool: Choose this for tools that are external to Canvas. For example, VoiceThread, Canvas Studio, etc.

  9. If this is a Group Assignment, click the check box next to, This is a Group Assignment. In the popup window you will have more options concerning group assignments. Please refer to this link for a more detailed understanding of these options.

  10. If this is an Assignment Peer Review, click the check box next to Require Peer Reviews.

    • a. How to Assign Peer Review: Choose to assign Peer Reviews manually or automatically by clicking the radio button next to your choice.
      Note: The Anonymity section will appear if you selected Peer Review. If you wish for reviews to remain anonymous, click the check box next to, Peer Reviews Appear Anonymously.
  11. Choose Assignment dates and times in the Assign to box.
    • a. Assign to: The default choice is Everyone. Click, in the box to either add different people or groups you wish to assign to.
    • b. Due: Click on the calendar icon to choose the date and/or time the Assignment will be due.
    • c. Available from: Click on the calendar icon to choose a scheduled date and/or time for the Assignment.
    • d. Until: Click on the calendar icon to choose a scheduled end date and/or time for the Assignment.
      Note: The Assign to dates and times section is optional, however, if a Due date is not set, the Assignment will not show up on students’ Dashboard To Do list and/or Calendar.

  12. If you wish to add different date and time specifications, i.e. for another group, section, etc., click the +Add at the bottom of the Assign to box and repeat the steps from #11.

  13. When you are completely finished, click Save & Publish.

    Note: click Save if you do not want to publish the Assignment yet.
  14. The created Assignment will now appear under the Module it has been added to.

Add an Existing Assignment

If you already have an Assignment in your Canvas course site, but you haven't added it to a Module, please refer to the instructions below.

  1. From the global navigation menu, click Modules.

  2. Choose the Module you wish to create an Assignment in, click the + sign to the far right.

  3. In the Add Item pop up window:
    • a. The dropdown box at the top will automatically be set to Assignment.
    • b. In the list below, find and click the name of the Assignment you wish to add.
    • c. Click Add Item when finished.

  4. The Assignment will now appear under the Module it has been added to.
