MacOS: Disable 802.1X

Issue 

• How do I disable 802.1X
• Disable 802.1X on MacOS
  • (This is currently an imperative on wired network interfaces used to connect to the Duquesne enterprise network, and does not apply to Wi-Fi connections.)

Step 1: Active Admin by Request

By default 802.1X setting are locked down to prevent users from making changes. To enable this option you must activate Admin by Request which elevates user permissions temporarily.

Please Note:

• When a Mac laptop is plugged into a new wired network device such as docking station, network dongle, or conference monitor, it will recreate an 802.1X connection and you will need to repeat these steps to re-disable that connection. 
• MacOS updates should not re-enable previously modified network settings such as the disabling of 802.1X but it is possible. If this occurs simply repeat the steps to re-disable this connection

Step 2: Change Network Settings

1. Open System Settings and go to Network
2. In the sidebar, click on your Ethernet/LAN adapter — the name varies by adapter (e.g., "USB 10/100/1000 LAN," "USB Ethernet," "Thunderbolt Ethernet"), so look for whichever wired connection is listed. If you don't see one, make sure the adapter is plugged in.
3. Click the Details… button
4. Go to the 802.1X tab
5. Toggle off Enable automatic connection (this may also be labeled Connect Automatically depending on your macOS version)
6. Click OK
