Accessing a Canvas Course Site
Accessing a Canvas Course Site
When will I gain access to the Canvas course I am teaching?
Canvas course sites will become available to instructors eight weeks before the semester starts. To receive a semester course site in Canvas, you must first be listed as the instructor of record in the Duquesne Portal/Banner.
If you are not listed as the instructor of record in the Duquesne Portal/Banner, please contact your department to be added as the instructor of record.
How do I access the current semester Canvas courses I am teaching?
Current semester courses will be displayed under the Unpublished sections of the Dashboard. They will stay in the Unpublished section until the course sites are published to students. To view the Canvas courses you teach in a current semester, you must first be assigned to the course in the Duquesne Portal/Banner.
Instructions: Find your Canvas Course
How do I access Canvas courses I taught in past semesters?
Once a semester and the course's end date occur, sites will move from the Dashboard to the Courses area.
Past semester sites can be accessed through Courses > All Courses, under the Past Enrollment section. Once a site moves to Past Enrollment, it will be read-only for instructors and students.
Instructions: Explanation of Past Term Courses
How do I add a Canvas course to my Dashboard?
Only current or future course and organization sites can be added to your Dashboard using the favorite star in the Courses area.
Instructions: How to customize your Courses list as an instructor
How can students access the Canvas course sites I teach?
For students to view current semester course sites on their Canvas Dashboard or under Courses > All Courses, the course site must first be published (made available to students).
If students need help finding a course in which they are enrolled, please have them contact their student success coach.
Instructions: How to publish a Canvas course to students
When can I access my future semester course sites?
Upcoming semester course sites will become available approximately two months before the official start of the semester.
Please request a Canvas Sandbox site if you would like to begin designing a future semester course site more than two months before the semester starts.
Instructions: Find your Canvas Course
I teach two or more sections of the same course. Can I merge the sections into one Canvas course site?
Yes. You can request a section merge if you teach two or more sections of the same course. For example, BRDG-105-02 and BRDG-105-04 could be combined into one Canvas course site named BRDG-105-02-04.
Request form: Submit a request to merge course sections
Importing (Copying) a Canvas Course Site
How do I copy content into a blank Canvas course?
A Banner-created Canvas course site will be created each semester for the courses you are scheduled to teach. Once the semester's course sites appear in Canvas, you can import existing content from a prior course site, a Sandbox site, or a Blackboard repository site.
If you do not see the course you are teaching, confirm through the Duquesne Portal that your current semester course assignment is listed.
Current semester Canvas course sites will appear in Canvas approximately eight weeks before the semester starts.
How do I share my content with a colleague?
Canvas course content can be shared with university colleagues in two ways:
- Add your colleague to a course you teach, or request that a colleague be added to a past semester course site.
- Export your course content and share it with your colleague using a Box shared file.
Adding Users to a Canvas Course Site
How do I add non-student users to a current or future semester Canvas course?
Users who are not enrolled through Banner/Duquesne Portal can be added to Canvas course sites. Available roles include Co-Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Designer, and Observer.
How do I add non-student users to a Canvas course I taught in the past?
Users who are not enrolled through Banner/Duquesne Portal can be added to Canvas course sites. Available roles include Co-Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Designer, and Observer.
To add non-student users to a past Canvas course, complete and submit the Educational Technology request form.
Request form: Request access for a non-student user to a past course
How do I add independent study students to a Canvas course site?
Independent study students can be enrolled in Banner-created course sites. All other students must be registered through the Duquesne Portal.
Request form: Submit an Educational Technology enrollment request
Student Participation Within a Canvas Course Site
When will students be enrolled in my Canvas course site?
Students must be enrolled through the Duquesne Portal/Banner to gain access to a Banner-created Canvas course site. Students will be enrolled continuously as they register through the Duquesne Portal/Banner.
For students to interact with course content, the Canvas site must be published and made available to students.
How do I extend students' participation (availability) dates for a current semester Canvas course?
Each Canvas course site has a participation (availability) end date based on the current semester. The instructor can extend this date to meet program needs.
Once the semester participation date ends, the instructor must request that the course be reopened. Review the instructions below for information about reopening a course before its end date.
Instructions: Changing a Course's Participation Dates (page 1)
How can I prevent students from viewing a past semester course site?
Once a semester's participation date ends, the course moves to a read-only state for instructors and students. To prevent students from accessing the read-only course site before the course participation end date, enable Restrict students from viewing course after term end date.
Instructions: Restricting End-of-Term Access (page 4)
How do I reopen a past-semester course site for students with incompletes?
Once a semester's participation date ends, the course becomes read-only for instructors and students, preventing students from completing coursework. If a student has an incomplete, a Canvas administrator in Educational Technology can reopen the course so the student can finish the required work.
Past-semester Canvas courses will only be reopened for students who need to finish an incomplete.
Request form: Request to reopen a past-semester Canvas course
Can students begin completing coursework if I publish my Canvas course before the semester starts?
Yes. Current semester course sites can accommodate courses that require students to complete pre-work before the semester officially begins. To enable this, change the course participation setting from Term to Course and move the course start date earlier.
