Modern Authentication

Body

Overview

Beginning fall, 2022, Computing and Technology Services (CTS) will require all Duquesne Office 365 account holders to access University email through modern authentication. All accounts that are not manually transitioned to modern authentication in the native mail application on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad)macOS computers (iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro/Air) and Android devices by fall, 2022 will be logged out of their account, requiring the users to login through the modern authentication method.

NOTE: Remember, you can ALWAYS access your Duquesne email by visiting duq.edu/mail.

What is modern authentication?

Modern authentication offers additional security for accounts, making it less likely for cyber attackers to gain access to a Duquesne University email account. The Outlook desktop and mobile apps already use modern authentication. Outlook apps are recommended for accessing Duquesne email; however, we understand some users prefer the native mail app on iOS, macOS and Android devices. These devices will need the native mail app to be configured for modern authentication.

What do I need to do?

To avoid interruption in access to your Duquesne University email, CTS recommends the following actions:

Why are these changes occurring?

In response to the increased volume in phishing emails sent to and from Duquesne University email accounts, Microsoft has developed security enhancements to better protect users from these types of incidents. Part of these enhancements involves changing our email authentication protocols from basic authentication to modern authentication. For more information on modern authentication, click here.
