Resolution

Computing and Technology Services (CTS) sends software and operating system updates to university-managed Windows computers through Software Center every month. Software Center keeps your computer's software current and compatible, and it avoids the unwanted programs or malware that often come bundled with internet downloads.

For general instructions on using Software Center, see Duquesne-managed Device: Software Updates.

Install Updates Now

  1. When updates are available, a notification appears in the bottom-right corner of your screen saying that software changes are required by your IT department.
  2. Select the notification, or select the Software Center icon in your taskbar.
  3. Select View required software to see a summary of the required updates.
  4. Choose to install all updates now.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.

Schedule Updates Outside Business Hours

  1. Open the update summary by selecting the notification or the Software Center icon in your taskbar, then select View required software.
  2. Choose to schedule the updates to install during non-business hours.
  3. When prompted, set your business hours.
  4. Select Automatically install required software outside of the specified business hours.
  5. Select Apply.
  6. Turn off your computer's sleep settings. If your computer is asleep when the updates are scheduled to install and restart, they will not run.

CTS Recommendation: Install updates and restart your computer during your lunch break or before you leave for the day. That way you don't have to set business hours or change your sleep settings.
