Issue
- I need to give someone else ownership of my Box folder
- I'm leaving my position and need to hand off my Box files
- How do I make another person the owner of a Box folder?
- I want to transfer my Box files to a colleague
- I can't transfer ownership of a single Box file
Environment
Resolution
Transfer Folder Ownership
- Invite the new owner (if needed): If the recipient isn't already a collaborator on the folder, select Share, invite them to the folder, and make sure they accept the invitation.
- Open the collaborator list: Open the folder and find the collaborator list in the right-hand pane.
- Change their role: Select the permission level dropdown (e.g., Editor) next to the new owner's name, then select Owner.
- Confirm: Select Okay to confirm the transfer.
This video explains how to transfer ownership of specific Box Folders
Transfer Ownership of an Individual File
Box does not allow ownership of a single file to be transferred directly.
- Move the file into a folder you own (or create a new folder for it).
- Transfer ownership of that folder using the steps in Transfer Folder Ownership above.
If the Current Owner Has Left the University
If the folder's owner is no longer at Duquesne, a co-owner or a Box administrator may need to complete the transfer. Reach out to Technology Support for assistance.
Additional Information
- Storage: Once transferred, the folder no longer counts against the original owner's storage allowance.
- Transferring outside Duquesne: If you transfer a folder to someone outside the Duquesne Box enterprise, any custom shared link URLs will be cleared.
- Large folders: Perform large transfers after business hours to minimize disruption to collaborators.
