How To: Enroll in Duo MFA

Body

Description

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security approach that uses two factors to authenticate your identity when signing into a website, application or other online services. Duquesne University uses Duo to manage the second factor of MFA: something you have. To enable Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your University account, begin by enrolling a device. The instructions below show how to enroll a smartphone with the Duo Mobile app installed–the recommended method.

If you do not want to enroll your smartphone in Duo MFA, view our list of Duo MFA devices and methods for other options. Before doing so, however, international students will want to review our Note for International Students.

Note for International Students

International students will want to use the Duo Mobile app in order to approve Duo Pushes. To do so, you will need a compatible iPhone or Android phone that can install apps from the App Store. This is the most reliable way to set up Duo Mobile from a country other than the United States. Follow the steps as provided in this article to do so.

It is sometimes possible to use your mobile phone number or an SMS text message to authenticate with Duo. However, in some countries and with some phones, you may experience issues with this process. If you are unable to enroll in Duo MFA using Duo Mobile and you are unable to receive phone calls or SMS text messages at this time, please contact the Center for Global Engagement and work with them to find an alternative way to process your documents. You can reach the International Admissions department by emailing intladmissions@duq.edu.

Once you arrive in the United States, please contact the IT Service Desk, who can help you in establishing a way to authenticate with Duo Mobile. Feel free to visit us in-person in the Student Union when you are on-campus for any additional assistance.

Users from certain restricted countries may receive an Access Denied message when attempting to enroll in Duo MFA. Review our article on OFAC restrictions and Duo's documentation on OFAC restrictions for further information.
