Public Safety - Drone Request

What Is It?

This service is used to request approval to operate an Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) — commonly known as a drone — on or above property owned, leased, or controlled by Duquesne University. This form collects flight plans, pilot certifications, insurance, and equipment details to ensure safe and compliant UAS operations.


Key Requirements

  • Recreational use prohibited: Hobby or personal drone use is not allowed on University property.

  • FAA certification required: Operations must be led by an FAA-certified Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) under Part 107 regulations.

  • Advance approval: Submit requests at least 14 business days in advance.

  • Insurance required: Provide proof of liability coverage ($1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate).

  • External vendors: Departments must coordinate with DMCPublic Safety (DUPS)Legal Affairs, and Risk Management.

  • Privacy and restrictions: Drones may not capture images in private areas (e.g., residence halls, locker rooms, restrooms). Indoor use is generally prohibited and requires special approval.

All operations must follow TAP No. 42: Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (Drones) and apply to students, faculty, staff, and third-party providers conducting University-directed activities such as education, research, or business.
