Duo MFA: Enroll Device

Issue

  • I need to set up Duo on my phone
  • I need to enroll a device in Duo
  • How do I turn on multi-factor authentication for my Duquesne account?
  • I’m being asked to set up Duo before I can log in
  • I’m an international student and can’t set up Duo

Environment

  • Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Resolution

Duquesne uses Duo to provide the second factor of multi-factor authentication (MFA): something you have. Enrolling a smartphone with the Duo Mobile app is the recommended method.

If you do not want to enroll your smartphone, see Duo MFA devices and methods for other options. International students should review the International Students section below first.

Enroll Your Smartphone with the Duo Mobile App

  1. Sign in to the Duquesne Portal at www.duq.edu/portal.
  2. In the Quick Links menu, select Duo Device Management.
  3. Click Start Setup.
  4. Select Mobile phone, then click Continue.
  5. Enter your mobile phone number, then click Continue.
  6. Select your phone’s make and model, then click Continue.
  7. Download the Duo Mobile app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  8. Once the app is installed, click I have Duo Mobile installed.
  9. Open the Duo Mobile app and scan the QR code shown on your computer screen.
  10. Click Continue to complete enrollment.

International Students

  1. Use the Duo Mobile app to approve Duo Push notifications. This requires a compatible iPhone or Android phone that can install apps from its app store, and is the most reliable way to set up Duo from outside the United States. Follow the steps in Enroll Your Smartphone with the Duo Mobile App above.
  2. Phone call or SMS text authentication may work, but can be unreliable in some countries and on some phones.
  3. If you cannot enroll with Duo Mobile and cannot receive phone calls or text messages, contact the Center for Global Engagement to arrange an alternative way to process your documents. You can also email International Admissions at intladmissions@duq.edu.
  4. Once you arrive in the United States, contact the IT Service Desk for help setting up Duo Mobile, or visit in person in the Student Union.

“Access Denied” When Enrolling from a Restricted Country

Users in certain restricted countries may see an Access Denied message when attempting to enroll. See:

Note: Duo blocks enrollment and authentication from countries subject to U.S. OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) sanctions, which produces the Access Denied message.
