How To: Import Course Content in Canvas

Description

In this article, you will learn how to import all content or specific content from one course in Canvas into another. Importing All Content will import the entire course, announcements, content, and assessments. Importing Specific Content will allow you to import only the content you choose. (i.e. only Modules but not Announcements.)

Import All Course Content

Importing All Content will import the entire course, announcements, content, and assessments.

  1. Start by entering the course you wish to import content TO.
  2. From the Home Page, click Import Existing Content located on the right-hand side.

  3. Click the dropdown menu next to Content Type and choose Copy a Canvas Course.

  4. Search for the course you want to import content from by:
    • a. Clicking the dropdown menu and clicking the course name from the list.
    • b. Typing the name of the course in the box that says Course Name.

  5. Click the radio button next to All Content to specify what content you want to import.

  6. Optional: Check the box next to Options to adjust due dates or remove dates from the imported course content altogether. For a more detailed explanation click here. If you need to change the dates after the import, you can follow the steps found here to complete a bulk due date update.

  7. Click the red Import button.

  8. The status of the import can be seen under Current Jobs. When the import is taking place, the status will show as Running.

    Note: The larger a course is, the longer the import will take.
  9. You will know the import has finished when the status has changed to Completed.

Select Specific Course Content to Import

Importing Specific Content will allow you to import only the content you choose. (i.e., only Modules but not Announcements.)

  1. Start by entering the course you wish to import content TO.
  2. From the Home Page, click Import Existing Content located on the right-hand side.

  3. Click the dropdown menu next to Content Type and choose Copy a Canvas Course.

  4. Search for the course you want to import content from by:
    • a. Clicking the dropdown menu and clicking the course name from the list.
    • b. Typing the name of the course in the box that says Course Name.

  5. Click the radio button next to Specific Content to specify what content you want to import.

    Note: You will not select the specific content you wish to import until after clicking the Import button.

  7. Click the red Import button.

  8. Under the Current Jobs area, click the red Select Content button.

  9. The content selection screen will appear.
    • a. Select course areas to import- i.e. Modules, Assignments, by clicking the box next to the content area name.
    • b. Select specific pieces of content- i.e. only some Pages not all, by clicking the arrow next to the area and clicking the box next to the item’s name.

  10. Click the red Select Content button when you are ready to import the selected content.
