How To: Add a VoiceThread Link in Canvas

This article is intended to walk you through the process of adding a VoiceThread to your Canvas course.

Adding a VoiceThread Link

  1. Create a Module to add your VoiceThread in. (Refer to these instructions for how to create a Module)
  2. In your Module, click on the + sign

  3. Select Add External Tool from the drop-down menu
  4. Click on VoiceThread

Creating an Individual VoiceThread for Lectures

  1. After adding the External Link (VoiceThread) to the Module:
  2. Select Individual VoiceThread
  3. To expand the window, click Open in full size tab
  4. Click Continue

  5. Select Create New VoiceThread

  6. Choose the type of media to add
    • a. Add from computer – upload a file from your computer (ex. PowerPoint)
    • b. Record video slide – take a video of yourself using your webcam
    • c. External source – select the Media Source (My VoiceThread, Khan Academy, flickr, Google Drive, New York Public Library)
    • d. Enter a URL– images and videos can be imported from other websites as long as you have the URL that point directly to that piece of media After selecting the type of media
    • e. Take a picture – take a picture of yourself using your webcam
    • f. Record audio slide – record only your voice

  7. For this example, we will select Add from computer to upload
  8. Upload a PowerPoint, Word Document, or PDF from your computer
  9. Click the slide you wish to leave a comment on
  10. Click Continue

  11. The first slide of your presentation will appear. Click on the comment icon that appears near the bottom center of your first slide

  12. A set of commenting options will appear.
    • a. ABC – leave a text-based comment.
    • b. Telephone – leave a comment by phone only use this if you don’t have a microphone or headset to record audio via a computer.
    • c. Microphone – leave an audio only comment.
    • d. Camera – leave an audio and webcam comment.

  13. If prompted, allow duq.voicethread.com to use your microphone and webcam.

    Note: this prompt will appear differently in various browsers.
  14. Begin recording after the 4 second countdown
  15. Refer to the options below while recording

  16. When finished, click Stop Recording

    Note: You can add more than one recording to a slide. The recordings will play in the order in which they were created. We recommend recording several short comments rather than one long one as this can save you time later if you need to edit your presentation by deleting individual comments and recording them rather than needing to re-record your entire presentation.
  17. Once the recording processes a preview will play. Click Cancel to discard the recording or Save to keep it

    Note: We do not recommend using the Record More Option (see note under number 16 above)
  18. Use the arrows located at the bottom left-hand side of the screen to navigate between slides and add more recordings by following steps 9-15 above
  19. To listen to or delete comments that you’ve already recorded, click on your avatar or initials on the right
  20. When you have finished recording your comment, click Continue

  21. Give the Activity a Name and Save

  22. Click Publish
  23. Once the URL appears in the URL textbox, click Add Item to link the selected VoiceThread to a course Module.

Creating an Individual VoiceThread for Lectures to a Page

  1. Enter the Page in which you wish to place VoiceThread (Refer to these instructions for how to create a Page).
    Note: You will need to create a Module before creating a Page. Refer to these instructions for how to create a Module)
  2. Once the page is created click the name of the page

  3. Click Edit to add your VoiceThread to the page

  4. From the Rich Content Editor select the plug icon

  5. Select View All

  6. From the list of All Apps, select VoiceThread
