What is Admin by Request (ABR)?
Admin By Request (ABR) is a software logging and compliance tool installed by CTS on university managed computers to make installing and running software easier and more secure. Admin by request allows you to complete tasks that require local administrator access without giving you permanent admin rights on your device, thus protecting your device from running unwanted application installers without prompting for permission.
Some software will require administrator permission to install or run, while other software has already been pre-approved by information security and considered safe to install. If you see a prompt asking for administrator access, Admin by Request will guide you through attaining that access, so you can safely continue your work.
When you download software to your computer, initiate an install, and the program needs administrator permissions, Admin by Request will step in to request or apply the necessary approval. This ensures software is installed safely, is logged for licensing concerns, and aids in keeping university systems protected.
Prohibited Software
The following are not permitted on university managed computers:
- Pirated, cracked, or illegally obtained software.
- Software that violates licensing terms
- Malware, hacking, games, or exploitation tools not explicitly approved for authorized research or coursework.
- Software that bypasses security controls such as endpoint protection, logging, or privilege management
- Personal software that interferes with system performance or security
The university reserves the right to restrict, remove, or block software that poses security, legal, performance, or compliance risks.
