Windows Update Notification Information

Windows update information for managed campus windows computers

Microsoft releases windows updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, unless there is a critical patch release (Out of Band). Updates released by Microsoft will be deployed to campus approximately 7 days after the initial release and are required to be installed within 7 days from that date. (we do have a pilot group that updates are released to first, if you would like to be part of this group, please contact the service desk).

Deferral for the installation of the updates once the notification occurs is 6 days, update installation will be attempted during a scheduled daily maintenance window time of 6:00am – 12:00am before the 7th day deadline.

The windows configured device will receive a notification to show the scheduled information.

If you miss the above notification, and your machine has pending windows updates to install you will also notice in the following in the notification area. You can click the referenced icon to view and schedule the updates.

If you chose not to install the Windows updates during the 6-day deferral period, the updates will be automatically installed, and the following notification boxes will be displayed in this order until the updates are successfully applied.

If the device is turned off during the maintenance window times, a notification box will appear giving you the time of installation. There is no deferral for the update, it will be applied, and the machine may need to be restarted.
