What Is It?

Departmental labs are computing facilities available for individual schools, departments or programs. A department is responsible for managing these labs, and Computing and Technology Services (CTS) provides limited support to them.

Departmental lab services

Departments that own a computing facility are responsible for the following items:

  • Scheduling: Departmental staff manages computer lab schedules for limited use by specific users.
  • Tier 1 technical support: Departmental technical staff provides tier 1 support for the computer lab and coordinates with CTS if additional support is needed.
  • Costs: The department is responsible for any costs associated with the following items:
    • Computing equipment, such as computers, monitors, keyboards and mice
    • Consumables, such as staples, paper, toner and sanitizing wipes
    • Furniture and fixtures
    • Hardware repair (if a device is out of warranty)
    • Physical security, such as cameras, cable locks and alarm systems
    • Specialized software for use in a lab that is not part of a campus license
