Description
Over time, computers naturally experience performance slowdowns, often noticeable around 4 to 5 years of use. While this is common as devices approach the end of their lifecycle, there are several steps you can take to help improve speed and extend usability.
1. Manage Your RAM
RAM is your computer's short-term memory and determines how much your computer can process at once.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select Task Manager (or command + option + esc for Mac users)
- In Task Manager, you can see which programs are using the most resources.
- Select any unused or heavy programs and click End Task or Force Quit to quit them.
Running fewer programs at once is always best practice, especially on older machines.
2. Change Your Internet Browser
Browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge use a very large amount of unnecessary resources. Consider switching to a lighter browser such as:
These browsers consume significantly less power and offer the same features as Chrome and Edge. The transition might take a little time, but it's much better for your machine's health.
3. Utilize External Storage
- External Solid State Drives (SSDs) are the fastest way to store and work with large files, relieving your internal hard drive. Smaller drives like Flash Drives can also be a cost-effective way to store files externally.
- You can also use cloud storage services like Box or OneDrive to store files and free up space on your device.
4. Remove Unnecessary Software
- Uninstalling unused programs can free up both system resources and storage space.
- To uninstall apps on Windows, go to Settings > Apps, select an app, and click Uninstall.
- On Mac, open Finder > Applications > Right Click, Move to Trash
5. Limit Startup Programs
Disabling unnecessary startup programs can improve boot time and reduce background resource usage.
- Open Task Manager, go to the Startup Tab, and disable any programs that you don’t need to start automatically.
- On Mac, open the Apple Menu > System Settings > General > Login Items > Select app, then click the minus (-) button
- Disabling them will not affect the app’s functionality.
6. Keep Your Operating System Updated
Regular updates provide performance improvements and security patches.
- Hit the Windows key and search for Dell Command Update.
- On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Updates > Update Now
- Follow the prompts and install any updates available.
7. Run Regular Malware Scans
Malware can slow down your system, so it's important to keep your computer free from malicious software.
8. Clean Up Temporary Files
Deleting temporary files and clearing your browser’s cache can free up valuable storage space.
